Heritage conversion and change of use

Architectural and planning services were provided to support the sensitive conversion and change of use of a prominent Grade II listed building, delivering seven residential apartments alongside retained office accommodation.

The project involved the careful adaptation of an historic former institutional building within an established urban setting, with a strong emphasis on preserving its architectural character, spatial hierarchy and contribution to the surrounding townscape. The external appearance of the building was retained in full, with interventions focused on internal reconfiguration, accessibility improvements and servicing upgrades.

The design approach sought to respect the most significant elements of the listed building, including the principal elevations, entrance sequence and key internal spaces, while enabling a viable mix of residential and commercial uses. Alterations were deliberately restrained, prioritising retention of historic fabric, reversibility of interventions and long-term sustainability.

Planning, listed building and technical matters were progressed alongside detailed design development, ensuring the proposals responded appropriately to heritage policy, operational requirements and contemporary standards. The scheme demonstrates a balanced, pragmatic approach to conservation-led redevelopment, allowing a valued heritage asset to remain in active and meaningful use.
