Longmeads Apartments, Writtle

Longmeads Apartments, Writtle

Architectural and planning services were provided for the restoration and conversion of a prominent late-19th-century building in the heart of Writtle into nine residential apartments.

Originally designed by Frederic Chancellor in 1877, the building had fallen into disrepair following a series of former institutional and community uses. The project focused on heritage-led adaptive reuse, securing the long-term future of the building while introducing high-quality residential accommodation.

The design carefully balanced the retention of key architectural features (including original proportions, window detailing and internal character) with the requirements of contemporary living. Internal layouts were sensitively reconfigured to create generous apartments that respond to the constraints and opportunities of the existing structure.

The scheme was progressed through planning and delivery, including detailed design coordination and contractor information, resulting in a successful conversion that preserves the building’s historic character while giving it a clear and sustainable new use.
